The Really Wild Hunt

Just had Herne the Hunter round, complaining.

Apparently after the sad case of Cecil the Lion, there's been a realisation in supernatural circles that chasing down your prey and killing it is not as popular with the public as it once was.

As a result, Gabble has been limited to only two Ratchets, which can only be used for the purposes of flushing souls out. The old use of a pack of Ratchets to tear souls apart is totally out of the question. Which is going to make the sounds of the Hunt going overhead nothing like as scary as it used to be.

As Herne said, it's not a Wild Hunt any more. In fact, to steal a line off a famous anthropomorphised gorilla (and let's face it, if we don't anthropomorphise animals what are they for?) - they're not so much Wild as Livid.

  1. That would explain why he rang me earlier and asked me to get five pounds of aniseed balls for Lughnasa.

  2. Hard to say. Herne has never quite mastered the art of predictive text, as he spends most of his time with one hand on his head trying to keep his antlers at the right angle. I did suggest a length of elastic under his chin (like on my old school hats) but he kept chewing it through at times of tension during the wilder of the wild hunts.

  3. I like your site, especially the Hardy Generator, which is beyond praise. However, I must warn you not to take the Wild Hunt lightly.

It is an ancient folk memory of steppe horsemen raiding pastoral communities as part of a wolf cult (cf. Romulus and Remus and the Rape of the Sabine Women).

It is a folkloric survival of Germanic paganism (cf. Perchta, the Bright Lady of the Crops).

It is a manifestation of demonic forces (cf. the Black Dog, to which it is closely related).

It is best left unthought of, unless encountered, when one should throw oneself face down to the ground and pray, hard.

  4. Ven B - if it can be all three of those I presume it can be a fourth? eg a skein of geese?

You're right about the Shuck though. Terrifying.
