It sounds like you've never visited the Pacific Northwest where church takes on an entirely different meaning. We have rural PNW America that is staunchly Fundamentalist (many flavors, one stance) and then we have citified peoples who are staunchly Atheist, Wiccan, or some eclectic form of ecumenical Christian/Buddhist/Taoist/etc with some mainstream church-goers thrown in to make things really interesting. I invite you to visit sometime and I'll introduce you to my varied and interesting crowd of friends. I think you'd make an excellent addition to our discussions.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4795284845836270713.post-80754256429787928752012-03-27T21:50:54.171+01:002012-03-27T21:50:54.171+01:00Your American follower appreciates your summation ...Your American follower appreciates your summation of Christianity in Britain. Likewise, I've been to two church services in Britain as an adult - one was St. Martin in the Field's Evensong service and the other was an unexpected Pentecostal service in a church in Scotland (somewhere near Inverurie). I had actually wanted to see a staid Sunday service with my own eyes and somehow accidentally wandered into the Doctor's Tardis and ended up in a hand-waving, tongue-speaking church and was very confused. The first time I was in England as a teen, I was with a Catholic group and after the nuns argued about how to find a Catholic church in Dover (where we were on Sunday), we gave up entirely, sang Kum-by-ya in a field and called it good. I read the part about the choir owning the service with great interest...you see, I've been to and worked as an organist/choir director at almost every type of worship house all over the US and never once have I ever felt in control of anything, least of which the choir. Once, in a Catholic service, the priest was so irritated at the length of our communion anthem, that he just started the post-communion prayer right over our singing. When asked later, he said, "just sing one verse, shut up and sit down". Roger that, Father. The fact that the song had a story and a climax in the final verse was clearly not as important as ensuring that everyone got out of church at precisely 60 minutes after they stepped into it. Episcopalians here, are sometimes referred to as "The Frozen Chosen" - especially in the south where things at other houses of worship can get...well...exciting. I have stories. Some are entertaining. I must get back to life on this side of the pond, but I appreciate the diversion and hope you don't mind my intrusion into your wonderful blog.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4795284845836270713.post-66517421256826370832012-03-27T21:48:51.216+01:002012-03-27T21:48:51.216+01:00This is why you are my favourite Christian :)This is why you are my favourite Christian :)Yewtreehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02028699564003381058noreply@blogger.com
