A National Church

"If the Church of England wants to be a national church, then it has to reflect the values of the nation." - Sir Tony Baldry, MP.
Regardless of the results of individual votes, if the Church of England has to reflect the values of the nation then it should prefer not to be a national church.

  1. Thus spake Rowan: "It seems as if we are wilfully blind to some of the trends and priorities of that wider society."

Until recently, I was totally committed to establishment (while recognising its anomalies.)

But if the price of establishment is to be obliged to conform to the "trends and priorities" of secular culture, then that is too high a price to pay. By a large margin. And regardless (as you rightly say) of how it plays out in particular votes on particular issues.

  2. Surely it has to be, if God is an Englishman (which he must be)?
