Larkin In Good Company

Holly Baxter wonders whether a plaque in Poets' Corner is a good idea for the agnostic Philip Larkin.

As Gerry Lynch points out in the comment the above links to: two words.

Thomas Hardy.

  1. What a weird article by Holly. Apparently, as a confirmed hater of Christianity, she wants to tell us what Christians can put in their own abbey (built by Catholics, currently on loan to the Anglicans). Moreover, since she's writing for the Grauniad she has to say that the poor abbey is associated with creative repression, homophobia and absolutist thought - so presumably she thinks Larkin was a liberal bore like herself.

Larkin (and Hardy) would have thought she was mad.
